This history is retraced and splendidly illustrated here for specialized and general readers alike. The very lengthy period under consideration has been subdivided into three important chronological sections: From Antiquity to the 17th Century, the 18th and 19th Centuries, and From the 20th Century to the New Millennium. In each of these sections the authors have carefully developed the aesthetic, social, choreographic, and technical aspects of the art of dance. They particularly consider how these relate to the world of music, literature and the figurative arts. The authors also reflect upon the reciprocal influences between various schools and the great artists of different countries. There are more than 400 pages lavishly illustrated in color to present dance not only as an art to be read about but also to visually admire and one to which we can simply let ourselves surrender.
