Solo la pioggia

by Longo, Andrej
Solo la pioggia

The Corona brothers: Carmine, Papele and Ivano. They are building contractors, feared and respected in the town for a disturbing past that has now been buried thanks to their money and their business. Carmine is the brains; Papele is the muscle; then there’s Ivano, the youngest brother, who studied, didn’t know the jungle of the street, and takes beautiful and melancholy photographs as a hobby. Every year, on the anniversary of their father’s death, they meet up. A visit to the cemetery without wives, children or relatives. And then dinner, just the three of them. Drinking, eating, laughing, sharing everything, as only brothers can. A custom that has lasted for eleven years. Dinner is at Ivano’s house, he lives alone and is a good cook. That evening it’s raining, an unstoppable and furious rain, which with the complicity of the wine, encourages the three brothers to open up more than usual. It could be a cathartic evening, in which they can get rid of masks they have been wearing for too long. But the truth is more frightening than a convenient lie. Solo la pioggia is a short, furious novel, which in precise movements and in a single space is capable of generating an explosion, staging the inseparable bond that binds together those who grew up together and placed their trust only in their family. And while the water falls unstoppably from the sky, crumbling the walls of houses built with too little cement, in the same way the certainties of the three brothers are swept away. With this ferocious, merciless, tense drama, Andrej Longo confirms himself as one of the strongest voices in our literature in recent years, capable of moving around the boundaries of literary genres.
