Quando Primo Levi diventò il signor Malabaila

by Zanda Carlo
Quando Primo Levi diventò il signor Malabaila

In 1966 Primo Levi was Italy’s foremost writer. Turin-based publishers Einaudi had already published his Se questo è un uomo and La tregua to great acclaim the world over. However, when he handed in his third book, Storie Naturali, Levi was told that it would have to appear under a nom de plume. Levi set aside his humiliation and agreed to use the name Damiano Malabaila. Carlo Zanda homes in on this seemingly trivial episode, building it into a tantalising little non-fiction novel that sheds unexpected light on the history of intellectual Italy in the booming 1960s.
