ON A MIDSUMMER NIGHT, THE WHALE ARRIVED…
Dad, mum, the cat and I quickly climbed up onto the roof
We each waited in our places in silence
We smelt a scent of algae and salt
Time would pass, then a breath
of cool air would ride in on a lick of wind.
The cat would be the first to notice.
It was a sign.
And it arrived… It eclipsed the moon… and showed us its belly…
It approached my father… touched his forehead
It stayed with him a while, then left

Peppo Bianchessi is an author and illustrator of children’s books published in Italy and around the world. He has collaborated, among others, with Donato Carrisi, Roberto Piumini, Aidan Chambers, Melvin Burgess, Luca Crovi, Pierdomenico Baccalario, Anna Vivarelli. In 2013 he was selected by Bologna Children’s Book Fair for the illustrators’ show.
