Il cane di Falcone
by Levantino Dario
The story of a special friendship between a stray dog and the Palermo magistrate. An uplifting novel about the value of courage and the strength of ideas that survive death.A book about the mafia and the figure of Falcone, seen through the eyes of a dog.A motherless puppy is picked up and cared for by a man. That man is Giovanni Falcone, a magistrate committed to fighting the mafia in the bloody Palermo of the 1980s. Uccio, who has escaped death several times, has developed a sense of justice that pushes him to commit himself against crime. But one night, while he was practicing honing his bark, Giovanni Falcone came down from a nearby building, caressed him and, despite not being able to take him home, welcomed him lovingly in the atrium of the Palermo court, where he worked with the its anti-mafia pool. From that moment, as sad mafia crimes follow one another, an intense friendship is established between dog and owner, which will only be ended by the brutal murder of the magistrate. In the end, old and with the last of his strength, Uccio takes up residence in the atrium of the Palermo court to watch over the statue of the judge targeted by the thugs, thus implementing the most important lesson learned by Falcone: courage. On the thirtieth anniversary of the Capaci massacre, a moving and delicate story which, lightly and without rhetorical tones, addresses a difficult topic and one of the darkest pages of our history, demonstrating that love and a sense of justice can triumph over any form of violence and oppression.
