The book focuses, through the testimony of some survivors, the little known episode of the mass deportation of Italian Carabinieri from Rome after Italy\’s surrender in WW2, on September 8, 1943. A week before the masss deportation of the Jewish community of Rome, the War Minister of the Italian Social Republic, Rodolfo Graziani, ordered the Carabinieri to remain in their barracks and surrender their weapons. On October 7,over two-thousand of themm were captured by the SS and sent to concentration camps. The German forces feared the Carabinieri could be an obstacle to the deportation of Jews, as explained by Gestapo officers in a telegram to colonel Herbert Kappler, the commanding officer of SS in Rome.
