When faced with an ancient text, written in Greek or Latin, one rarely thinks of it precisely as a text. A text that has come down to us today, handed down through a long and more or less winding journey, and that now appears to the reader’s eyes as written in a certain way and not another, with those specific words and not others, arranged in that order and not another, due to the interplay of multiple factors: philological, linguistic, but also communicative and expressive. All these elements, invaluable for an accurate translation, often get lost along the way, together with the true essence of translating an ancient text.
This small manual aims to provide food for thought on these issues, seeking to outline—also through examples drawn from Greek and Latin literatures—some “best practices” to follow when tackling the translation of ancient source texts. It places the reader’s attention on linguistic elements often overlooked, but of paramount importance for enhancing textual skills in order to produce a target text that is as accurate as possible.
Accompanying the reader on this journey is a rich and up-to-date bibliography, along with a webography that pays special attention to digital projects currently available in the international landscape for accessing Greek and Latin works.
