On the island of La Maddalena, Sardinia, in the year 1865, as everyone gathers to witness the fireworks and the traditional procession in honor of the patron saint, and enjoy games and various stalls, the lifeless body of a woman is discovered. She is a well-known prostitute by the name of Isis. Simultaneously, Enea, the coachman of one of the island’s public carriages, mysteriously vanishes. But who could have a motive to harm a destitute prostitute, and why has Enea, who was awaiting a significant sum of money, disappeared without a trace?Once more, the marshal of the Carabinieri Reali, Bachisio Tanchis, must step in. However, the island of La Maddalena serves as a crossroads for conspirators, aristocrats, secret agents, and smugglers. The investigation will take the marshal and a former captain of the British Navy, Daniel Roberts, on a journey through the islets of the archipelago, amidst the crystal-clear sea, alluring vistas, and unique inhabitants. They will encounter everyone from the king of Tavolara to the lighthouse keepers of Razzoli, and the most famous of all, Giuseppe Garibaldi, the ‘hero of two worlds’ who retired to Caprera after his endeavors to unite the country. Bachisio Tanchis will soon find himself entangled in murky village schemes and a convoluted plot that extends far beyond the island’s borders.
