1914. Qualcosa di nuovo sul Fronte occidentale

On the night of 24-25 December 1914, the first Christmas of the war on the Western Front, south ofYpres, something exceptional happened: there was a truce. But it was not decided by the high commandsof the two sides: it was a spontaneous truce decided by the soldiers, covering about 18 km of the front. The British and German soldiers came out of the trenches and met in no-man’s land. They wished eachother a Merry Christmas, exchanged gifts and buried the dead. A funeral service was also held. AntonioBesana made a sort of pilgrimage along the main battlefields of the Western Front (Verdun, La Somme,Vimy, Ypres) narrating the events of the war there, in search of the places and reasons for the Christmastruce. With the help of the documents kept in the historical archive of Ypres and an extensive bibliographyon the subject, the author has returned to the places where the truce began, reliving it through thestories of the protagonists. The book is accompanied by numerous historical photographs and touristinformation for those who wish to repeat the journey along the same roads.
